This home in Edgemoor was originally built by Sandy Spring Builders in 2008. When the new owners bought it in 2015, they wanted the original design and builder team to do their renovation. This traditional French country home was to be transformed into a fabulous contemporary home, retaining the original front elevation and rear pool area and making the interior like a completely different home. Although the front façade remains the same, once you step through the heavy wood front door, you enter a home that is light, contemporary and elegant. While the original home was an award-winning beauty, the décor was French country with heavy beams and provincial interior design and furnishings – the renovated home is a spectacular award-winning contemporary home with art and furniture that capture the totally modern feel that the owners desired.

The major structural change to the original design was to remove the Kitchen fireplace and exterior rear fireplace, and replace it with an industrial looking interior column and wall of glass in the Kitchen sitting area. Instead of a sitting area in front of a traditional fireplace with a sofa, the new owners wanted a lot of glass to the outside with a cool contemporary sitting space. Additionally, the sunken dining and living rooms were raised to the entry hall height and plaster arched ceilings revamped to a modern, clean lined elevation.  All of the antique dark wood beams, flooring, fixtures, tile, etc. that had been originally brought from France and Morocco, were salvaged and re-purposed elsewhere. They were replaced with lighter, sleeker contemporary wood flooring, beams, tile, and fixtures. The first floor layout was not dramatically changed in terms of space use, but walls were moved, and design features added so that every room looks drastically changed from before. The original home had a shared Master Bathroom and the new owners converted this so that there are now his and her bathrooms and individual large walk-in closets. The original kitchen had traditional custom cabinetry, and the new cabinets were custom-made with a very clean and linear edge to them. The mantra for this project was “Out with the old, in with the new!”

Our featured home is located in the Edgemoor neighborhood of Bethesda. Edgemoor’s exceptional reputation is only part of what residents say is special about the neighborhood, just west of downtown Bethesda. Edgemoor is within walking distance of the restaurants and shops of Bethesda Row and surrounds, and offers a short commute to downtown Washington and Northern Virginia. The Bethesda Metro station is also in walking distance, and a bustling social life is available through the Edgemoor Club, a private swim and tennis club, and the Edgemoor Citizens Association, which sponsors events throughout the year. Edgemoor was established in the early 1900s and has always drawn its identity from its proximity to downtown Bethesda, according to the Edgemoor Citizens Association. But residents say it wasn’t until the past decade or so, when downtown Bethesda grew into the bustling center of commerce and nightlife that it is today, that the neighborhood acquired its “panache”. Sandy Spring Builders has had the unique distinction of building more new homes and renovations than any other builder in the area. And we are proud sponsors of the Edgemoor 5K race.
